Sprouting Chia Seeds

The chia is a flowering plant that grows naturally in Guatemala and Mexico and belongs to the mint family. It was a staple in the diet of Aztecs and Mayans centuries ago and it is gaining in popularity in modern times due to the many health benefits it provides.

Chia sprouts and seeds contain high levels of antioxidants and other nutrients that can help prevent disease and maintain healthy weight.

Chia contains high levels of omega-3 fatty acids and is an excellent source of fiber, protein and calcium. It is one of the best plant sources for polyunsaturated fatty acids, which control cholesterol levels and reduce inflammation.

It contains phosphorus, magnesium and manganese, minerals that play an important role in energy metabolism and the synthesis of DNA.

Chia sprouts are microgreens and can be consumed root and all. Sprouts offer the additional benefit of providing chlorophyll, the substance that makes the leaf green.

Chlorophyll helps the body replenish and increase the number of red blood cells, which are responsible for carrying oxygen to all parts of the body.

Many whole food stores now carry chia sprouts but they can be expensive. Consumers can save money and have a fresh source of sprouts by learning to grow them at home. With seeds and just a few supplies, anyone can grow chia sprouts to add to their favorite recipes.

Chia seeds sprout are best when grown using a sprinkle sprouting method. The supplies needed for growing are seeds, a shallow tray, water and aluminum foil. Unlike like some seeds, chia seeds do not require extensive presoaking.

Many legumes, for example, must presoak for 24 hours before sprouting in a jar or tray. When chia seeds are exposed to water, their surfaces become coated with a gel. If they soak too long, the gel inhibits their ability to germinate and they start to rot.

The first step to growing sprouts is to place equal amounts of seeds and water in the tray. Let the tray sit for an hour before carefully pouring the water out, leaving the seeds behind.

Cover the top of the tray with aluminum foil. The seeds grow best at a temperature of between 70 and 85 degrees. If room temperature is lower than that, a heating pad or space heater can help maintain the proper temperature through the growth period. The seeds will start growing after approximately four days.

Water quality can have an effect on how the seeds grow. Chlorine and other chemicals in regular tap water can slow down the growth rate of chia seeds. Using bottled or filtered water protects the seeds and speeds up the process.

The sprouts are ready for harvest when they have grown approximately one-half inch. Separate the sprouts from the roots and wash them in cold water.

After harvest, they will keep in the refrigerator for up to two weeks in an airtight container. The sprouts can be consumed raw in salads or sandwiches. When cooked or steamed they add a spicy flavor to the dish.
